No person shall ride on any vehicle upon any portion thereof not designated or intended to the use of passengers. This section shall not apply to an employee engaged in the necessary discharge of a duty, or to persons riding within truck bodies intended for merchandise, except that persons below the age of sixteen must be accompanied by an adult when riding within such truck bodies.
